Penpot is an open-source design and prototyping platform built by Kaleidos, a Madrid company that pivoted from consultancy to open-source products. It is released under the Mozilla Public License, developed in the open on GitHub, and can be run either as a hosted service or entirely on a customer's own infrastructure.
Its defining technical choice is that it is built natively on open web standards — SVG, CSS, HTML and JSON — rather than a proprietary rendering model. A Penpot design is not a file format that needs translating into code; it already is web objects. That collapses much of the designer-to-developer handoff: inspect mode yields usable CSS and SVG directly, flex and grid layout behave as they will in the browser, and Penpot was the first design tool to implement native design tokens against the W3C Design Tokens Community Group standard, so tokens map straight to CSS variables.
Around that sit the capabilities a product team expects: real-time multi-user editing, commenting, interactive prototyping with flows and overlays, components with variants and overrides, shared libraries for design systems at scale, version history, and a plugin API.
The commercial proposition is independence rather than price. Organisations that self-host hold their own data, choose their own jurisdiction, can audit the source, and face no file-format lock-in — which is why adoption is strongest among teams and public bodies prioritising vendor independence and digital sovereignty. Signups reportedly surged when Adobe announced its Figma acquisition.
Penpot reports over 500,000 users and more than 35,000 GitHub stars.

A world where design tools are open infrastructure rather than rented platforms — where a team's files, its workflow and its ability to walk away are not decisions somebody else gets to make.
We build a design platform on open web standards and release it as free software, so any team can run it on its own infrastructure and no design file is ever hostage to another company's roadmap or pricing.
