OpenText Content Management overview

OpenText Content Management, still widely known as Extended ECM, is an enterprise content management platform aimed at large organisations and government bodies that need to govern high volumes of documents and records under regulatory scrutiny. Its distinguishing idea is integration rather than destination: instead of asking users to leave their system of record to file a document, Extended ECM surfaces governed content directly inside SAP, Microsoft 365 and Teams, Salesforce and Guidewire through business workspaces tied to the underlying business object — a purchase order, an employee, a claim, a project.

The repository underneath handles version control, check-in and check-out, full audit trails, metadata and taxonomy management, and records lifecycle management covering both electronic and physical records through to defensible disposition. Archive Center manages long-term retention and storage tiering, which matters in industries where retention obligations run to decades.

Purpose-built variants exist for SAP SuccessFactors, Salesforce, engineering environments, government and life sciences, the last of these supporting validated environments for regulated pharmaceutical and medical device work.

More recently OpenText has layered AI into the platform through its content assistant capabilities, allowing users to search and summarise across governed repositories rather than treating AI as a separate tool with its own copy of the data.

Deployment is unusually flexible and commercially significant: the product runs as SaaS, in an OpenText-managed private cloud, on AWS, Azure or Google Cloud, or fully on-premises. Which of those a customer chooses materially changes the certifications that apply — see the risks below.
