Open 3D Engine, or O3DE, is a continuously evolving and unencumbered open source 3D engine backed by a community of users and contributors. It supports high fidelity, modular, cross-platform development, and its stated application areas run beyond games to robotics, education and metaverse experiences, making it a general-purpose real-time 3D engine rather than a games-only tool.
Modularity is a core design principle, so teams can compose the engine from the parts they need instead of adopting a monolith. The project emphasises interoperability with other tools and standards, and a cloud-friendly architecture. Being open source and unencumbered, it carries no licence fees or contractual gates, and development happens in the open with community contribution rather than behind a vendor's closed roadmap. Governance and direction are community driven.
The combination targeted by the project is high fidelity output with the flexibility to embed the engine into simulation, training and visualisation work as readily as into game production.
