Obsidian is a knowledge base that works on a folder of plain markdown files on local disk. That storage decision is the whole product philosophy: notes are ordinary text files the user owns, readable and editable by any other program, with no proprietary database and no lock-in if the company ever disappears.
On top of those files it layers bidirectional linking with backlinks and outgoing links, an interactive graph view of connections, tags, aliases, canvas for spatial arrangement, and templating. Its extensibility is unusual — a community plugin ecosystem of well over a thousand plugins covers spaced repetition, kanban, calendars, task management, database views, Git integration and much else, plus community themes and a full CSS layer for appearance.
The application is free without limits for personal use and needs no account. Optional paid services are Sync at four dollars monthly billed annually for encrypted cross-device synchronisation, Publish at eight dollars monthly per site, a twenty-five dollar Catalyst supporter licence, and a fifty dollar per user annual commercial licence. The company is user-funded with no outside investors.
