MongoDB Atlas overview

MongoDB Atlas is the fully managed cloud version of MongoDB, the document database used by developers to build applications where a rigid relational schema gets in the way. Data is stored as flexible JSON-like documents, so the shape of a record can evolve alongside the application rather than requiring a migration for every change — while multi-document ACID transactions, schema validation and secondary indexes keep the guarantees a production system needs.

Atlas removes the operational work. MongoDB provisions and runs clusters across AWS, Azure and Google Cloud, handling replication, automated failover, patching, backups, point-in-time recovery and auto-scaling of compute and storage. Clusters can span regions or clouds, and Global Clusters let teams pin specific data to specific geographies to satisfy residency requirements.

What distinguishes Atlas from a plain hosted database is the surrounding platform. Atlas Search brings Lucene-based full-text search into the same system as the operational data. Atlas Vector Search supports semantic retrieval and retrieval-augmented generation, so AI applications can query embeddings and source records together instead of maintaining a separate vector store. Atlas Stream Processing handles continuous event data, Data Federation and Online Archive query across cloud object storage, and Charts provides embedded visualization.

Security controls include fine-grained role-based access, database auditing, encryption in transit and at rest, customer-managed encryption keys, Queryable Encryption, VPC peering and private endpoints, and federated authentication.

Entry is genuinely free: a 512 MB M0 cluster costs nothing indefinitely, with usage-based Flex clusters and hourly dedicated clusters above it.

Vision

A world where developers are never slowed down by their database — where one data platform handles documents, search, analytics and AI, across any cloud, without stitching six systems together.

Mission

We give developers a unified, elegantly simple data platform so they can build and modernize applications faster, and run them anywhere, without trading away scale, resilience or control.
