Godot is a free and open source game engine for building 2D and 3D games, cross-platform projects and XR experiences. Its architecture is scene-driven, built on nodes as composable building blocks, with a modular structure that allows custom engine modules. Scripting is flexible: GDScript is a Python-inspired language with optional static typing for better performance, first-class C# support serves .NET developers on desktop and mobile, the GDExtension API provides official C++ support for custom components, and community bindings exist for Rust, Nim, Python and JavaScript. For 3D, renderers include Vulkan, Direct3D 12 and Metal, with OpenGL support for most modern GPUs, and the engine imports Blender files, glTF and FBX. A dedicated 2D pipeline uses pixel-based units and includes a tile map editor for procedural and hand-crafted levels, plus a scalable GUI system. OpenXR and WebXR are built in. Godot is MIT licensed with no contracts or fees, and its source is public on GitHub.
