Ghost is an open-source publishing platform combining a website, an email newsletter and a paid subscription business in one application. Posts publish to the site and send as email in the same action, with segmentation by member tier so free and paying audiences can receive different content.
Memberships, tiers, one-off and recurring payments run through Stripe with no platform fee taken by Ghost, which distinguishes it from hosted newsletter services that take a revenue share. The editor is deliberately clean, supporting markdown, dynamic cards for embeds, galleries, bookmarks and email-only content. Themes are fully customisable through a Handlebars templating layer, and a content and admin API supports headless use.
Because it is open source under the MIT licence, the whole thing can be self-hosted at no cost. Ghost(Pro) is the managed hosting service that funds development, priced from eighteen dollars monthly for a thousand members through Publisher, Business and Custom tiers. Ghost is run by the non-profit Ghost Foundation, registered in Singapore.
