Dropbox is a cloud storage and content collaboration platform, and the product that largely created the consumer file sync-and-share category when it launched in 2008. Its core has always been the sync engine: block-level transfer that moves only the changed parts of a file, selective and smart sync to keep local disks manageable, and version history with recovery windows that extend to 180 days on business plans.
Around that sit the sharing controls organisations actually buy — password-protected and expiring links, file requests from people without accounts, large transfers up to 100 GB with company branding, and admin tooling covering tiered administrator roles, device approvals, domain verification and account transfer.
Since 2023 the company has been repositioning around Dropbox Dash, an AI-powered universal search layer that indexes content across connected applications including Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Slack and Notion, so a query returns the right document regardless of which system it is stored in. Dash also extends into video and image search and connects to Teams and Slack directly. Alongside it, Dropbox Sign provides e-signature, DocSend adds document sharing with viewer-level analytics, and Replay supports frame-accurate video review.
Security is handled through AES-256 encryption at rest and TLS in transit, SSO and SCIM provisioning, MFA enforcement, audit logging, legal hold, and ransomware detection with rewind.
Dropbox reports more than 700 million registered users across roughly 180 countries, though the large majority sit on the free tier. It has been publicly traded on NASDAQ since 2018.

A world where the work about the work disappears — where whatever you need is one search away no matter which app it lives in, and coordination stops eating the day.
We design a more enlightened way of working: one place to keep, find and share content across every app a team already uses, so people spend their time on the work itself.
