Deel is a global employment platform that lets a company hire people in countries where it has no legal presence. Founded in 2019 by MIT graduates Alex Bouaziz and Shuo Wang, it now operates across more than 150 countries and reports over a billion dollars in annualised revenue.
The central mechanism is the Employer of Record model. Deel maintains its own legal entities in each market and becomes the formal employer of the worker, handling the employment contract, statutory benefits, pension contributions, payroll taxes and termination obligations under local law, while the customer directs the day-to-day work. For a company that wants one engineer in Portugal or a sales lead in Brazil, that replaces a months-long entity incorporation with a per-employee monthly fee.
Alongside it, contractor management handles independent contractors with localised agreements and misclassification screening, and global payroll consolidates existing owned-entity payrolls into a single cycle. Workers are paid in multiple currencies through more than fifteen withdrawal methods.
Deel HR sits underneath as a free HRIS covering the whole headcount regardless of how each person is engaged, which is unusual in the category — most competitors charge for the system of record. Around it the company has assembled equity administration, immigration and visa sponsorship, US PEO services, and device management through Deel IT, largely via acquisition.
The commercial consequence worth understanding is that Deel is not only a software vendor. Under EOR it assumes legal employment liability and moves payroll funds on the customer's behalf.
