Databricks overview

The Databricks Data Intelligence Platform is a cloud data and AI platform built on the lakehouse architecture, which merges the open storage of a data lake with the transactional guarantees and query performance of a data warehouse. It was created in 2013 by the team behind Apache Spark and now serves more than 20,000 organizations, including a majority of the Fortune 500.

The data foundation is open. Delta Lake and Apache Iceberg provide the table formats, so data stays in the customer's own cloud object storage in open formats rather than a proprietary store. Lakeflow handles ingestion, declarative ETL and orchestration; Databricks SQL runs warehouse workloads through the vectorized Photon engine; Lakebase adds a Postgres-compatible operational database for applications that need transactional reads and writes alongside analytics.

The AI layer sits directly on that governed data. Mosaic AI covers model training, fine-tuning, evaluation and serving, including third-party foundation models; Agent Bricks supports building and evaluating production agents; Genie exposes natural-language analytics to business users; MLflow tracks experiments and manages model lifecycle.

Unity Catalog is the governance spine, applying one permission, lineage and audit model across tables, files, dashboards, notebooks, models and agents — which matters more as agents rather than people begin issuing queries. Delta Sharing and the Databricks Marketplace extend that governance to data shared outside the organization.

The platform runs as a managed service on AWS, Azure and Google Cloud. On Azure it is sold as a first-party Microsoft service.
