Citrix DaaS overview

Citrix DaaS delivers virtual applications and desktops to users on any device, and is the current form of the product line that began as XenApp and XenDesktop and later became Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops. Its defining architectural choice is the split between planes: Citrix hosts and operates the control plane as a cloud service, while the actual workloads — the virtual delivery agents, the images, the application data — stay wherever the customer chooses to place them. That can be an on-premises datacentre, Microsoft Azure, AWS, Google Cloud, Nutanix, or a combination.

Because the control plane holds only brokering and monitoring metadata such as user names, machine names and application shortcuts, customer content and intellectual property remain in the customer's own environment. Traffic between cloud and premises runs over TLS on port 443.

The delivery layer is built on HDX, Citrix's adaptive display protocol, tuned for high-latency and constrained networks — historically the reason Citrix persists in healthcare, financial services, government and manufacturing where thin clients and poor connectivity are normal. Around it sit Autoscale for capacity and cost management, Machine Creation Services and Provisioning for image management, and Workspace Environment Management for session tuning.

Security is delivered through Citrix Secure Private Access for zero-trust access to internal and SaaS applications, adaptive authentication with device-posture policies, app protection against keylogging and screen capture, and session recording with administrative audit trails.

Citrix is a business unit of Cloud Software Group, alongside NetScaler, TIBCO and Arctera.
