Canvas is a cloud-native learning management system from Instructure, and it displaced a great deal of legacy LMS deployment in higher education and K-12 on the strength of usability and openness.
Courses hold modules, pages, assignments, quizzes, discussions and files, with SpeedGrader letting instructors mark submissions with inline annotation, rubrics and audio or video feedback in one continuous flow rather than downloading and re-uploading. The gradebook supports weighted groups, late policies, hidden grades and export.
Its architecture is deliberately open: a comprehensive REST API, LTI support for third-party tools, and an open-source core mean institutions extend it rather than wait for the vendor. Canvas Studio adds interactive video with in-video questions and commenting, Canvas Catalog runs course catalogues and enrolment for continuing education, and Canvas Credentials issues digital badges. Mobile apps serve students, teachers and parents separately. Integration covers student information systems, Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Zoom, Turnitin and publisher content. Licensing is institutional, quoted by enrolment, with a free-for-teachers tier for individual educators.
