Box is a cloud content management platform that gives an organization a single, governed place for its unstructured content — documents, contracts, designs, research, media — rather than leaving it spread across local drives, email attachments and departmental file shares. Founded in 2005 as a consumer file-sharing service, Box pivoted to the enterprise around 2009 and now positions itself as an Intelligent Content Management platform.
The collaboration layer covers unlimited storage, preview for more than fifty file types, granular seven-level permissions, unlimited external collaborators on higher tiers, co-authoring through Box Notes and Box Canvas, and native unlimited e-signature via Box Sign. More than 1,500 integrations connect it to Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, Salesforce, Slack and the rest of the enterprise stack, so Box tends to sit underneath existing tools rather than replacing them.
The differentiation is governance. Box Shield adds classification, threat detection and data-leak controls; Box Governance handles retention schedules, legal hold and defensible disposition; Box KeySafe gives customers control of their own encryption keys; and Box Zones lets customers pin content storage and processing to specific geographies across ten regions. That combination is why Box is common in financial services, life sciences, government and healthcare, where content itself is the regulated asset.
Box AI applies question-answering, summarization and metadata extraction to that governed content, with Box AI Studio for building custom agents and Box Doc Gen for template-driven document generation — all inside the existing permission model, so AI inherits access controls rather than bypassing them.
