Blackboard overview

Blackboard is one of the oldest and most widely deployed learning management systems in higher education, now part of Anthology following the merger of Blackboard and Anthology in 2021.

Blackboard Learn Ultra, the current generation, delivers course content, assignments, discussions, tests and grading through a redesigned interface, with an Ultra Course View that modernised the experience considerably from the classic version many institutions used for years. Assessment covers question pools, randomisation, rubrics, anonymous and delegated grading, and integration with proctoring and originality-checking services. Blackboard Ally analyses course materials for accessibility problems and generates alternative formats — audio, electronic braille, tagged PDF — automatically, which is a genuine differentiator for institutions with legal accessibility obligations.

Analytics report student engagement and risk indicators for early intervention. Collaborate provides virtual classrooms with breakout groups. It integrates with student information systems, library systems and publisher content through LTI. Anthology also supplies student information, CRM and enterprise systems, so Blackboard sits inside a wider institutional suite. Licensing is institutional and quoted by enrolment.
