Bear is a markdown writing and note-taking app built exclusively for Apple platforms — macOS, iOS, iPadOS, Apple Watch and Vision Pro — a deliberate constraint that lets it use native frameworks and feel considerably more polished than cross-platform alternatives.
Notes are written in markdown with inline preview, so formatting appears as it is typed without a separate preview pane, and the editor supports code blocks with syntax highlighting across many languages, tables, todos, and inline images and files. Organisation uses nested hashtags rather than folders, so a note can live under several topics at once and the sidebar builds itself from the tags in use. Notes link to each other with wiki-style references for building a connected set of documents.
Bear Pro unlocks sync across devices through iCloud, export to PDF, Word, HTML, ePub and other formats, additional themes and fonts, and encrypted notes. Pricing is modest at around three dollars monthly or thirty dollars annually, with a free tier on a single device. Bear is made by Shiny Frog in Florence, Italy.
